When our daughter was born, my husband and I decided to bank Katie’s cord blood, to preserve her stem cells for possible future use. Despite the fact that neither of us had a family history of any of the 47 life-threatening diseases that cord blood stem cells have already been used to treat, we figured we would rather be safe than sorry and take out this "insurance" for our family. In fact, there is great promise that cord blood may be used to cure heart disease, stroke, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and countless other ailments someday. We did our research, and chose the best company we could find, Viacord.
Rarely a week goes by, without something in the news about stem cells. However, I don’t think most people know much about what they are, the limited sources from which they can come, and what incredible promise they hold. Ever heard of a bone marrow transplant? This is just one source of stem cells. Unfortunately, an exact match cannot always be found and these cells are rejected more often than cord blood stem cells. Nevertheless, I doubt that most people, much less parents or grandparents-to-be, know that this, literally, once in a lifetime opportunity to bank a baby’s cord blood even exists!
Even before I became pregnant with Katie, I always asked friends and family whether they had looked into cord blood banking. Since we opted to do it, I have continued to spread the word. Now, the company that we banked Katie’s blood with has asked me to join its Mothers Circle - a group of moms devoted to educating parents and grandparents about the power and potential of cord blood banking. As an advocate for cord blood banking and an educator, by training and at heart, I eagerly accepted this task.
Now I am asking for your help. If you know anyone who is pregnant or expecting a grandchild in the near future, please feel free to forward this website to them or have them e-mail me at my website at ViacordMom@cordbloodbanking. org. I would love the opportunity to share all that I have been learning about cord blood banking. In turn, I can offer them $100 off the cost of their Viacord enrollment fee. If they choose to contact Viacord directly, they may still use my name to get this discount.
If you are interested in learning more about stem cells or cord blood baking and the promise they hold, I encourage you to call Viacord’s Mothers Circle at (866) 758-5115, check out www.viacord.com or read the articles on the "Why Bank" part of this site. I can also mail or e-mail you a copy of a Viacord poster with a $100 discount for you to share with friends, family, or others who might be interested in cord blood banking. Just think, by helping me spread the word, you may also be helping to possibly save a child’s, their sibling’s, parent’s, or grandparent’s life someday! Thank you so much for your help.
